Q ARABICA GRADER
Training, Exam & Certification
May 15 - 20, 2017

THE PROGRAM

A good bean is the first step toward achieving a perfect cup of coffee. Reinforcing the standards of specialty coffee links everyone in the supply chain with an integrity that shows pride in the product. According to SCAA standards for arabica, a coffee that is free of primary defects or unclean odors and scores 80 or above on the SCAA cupping form is considered Specialty Grade. While many variables in roasting and brewing affect the taste of coffee, Q Coffees™ confirm that the beans being used are Specialty and among the highest quality in the world. This is the only mark that certified coffees on a quality scale for arabica.

A Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) Q Arabica Grader is an individual who is credentialed by the CQI to grade and score coffees utilizing standards developed by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA).
Currently, there are no formal requirements to enroll. However, the Q Grader Exam is not a course for inexperienced or new cuppers; it is an advanced level course. The course for becoming a Q Arabica Grader prepares participants for for the 22 tests they must pass to become a certified Q Grader. The tests relate to an individual’s ability to accurately and consistently cup and grade coffee according to SCAA cupping and grading standards and protocols, including a thorough understanding of the SCAA cupping form. A student who passes these 22 tests is given a professional license as a Q Grader. This license must be renewed every 3 years by attending a Q Grader calibration to ensure the Q Grader is up-to-date.

My name is Jodi. Coffee has been a part of my life for a really long time. From a very early age, my dad would bring back coffee from his world travels and I found it so intriguing. I also got the travel bug, and after college I moved to Mali, West Africa for two years to focus on international development work.  Upon returning from Mali, I attended graduate school and earned a double masters in Intercultural Studies and Theology. I worked with Willem Boot, and the Boot Coffee Team, as a quality consultant and trainer for 7 years.  Now, I'm a licensed Q Grader Instructor, as well as a Certified Instructional Trainer for the Specialty Coffee Association of America. My life-long admiration for coffee, along with my education and experience abroad, provide the perfect framework for a successful career in the coffee industry.
